The gems and jewellery industry occupies an important position in the Indian economy. It is a leading foreign exchange earner and also one of the fastest growing industries in the country. The gems and jewellery market essentially comprises sourcing, processing, manufacturing and selling of precious metals and gemstones such as gold, platinum, silver, diamond, ruby, sapphire, among others. This industry is highly un-organized and fragmented with 96% of the total players being family-owned businesses.

The two major segments of the sector in India are gold jewellery and diamonds. Gold jewellery forms around 80 per cent of the Indian jewellery market, with the balance comprising fabricated studded jewellery that includes diamond studded as well as gemstone studded jewellery.

JAIPUR-‘Special Place’ Jaipur is India’s second important gems and jewellery exporting centre and the first for sales to foreign tourists. It is one of the most successful & vibrant Gem & Jewellery Clusters in the country. The city is known for its fine gem cutting and polishing and jewellery craftsmanship, cutting and polishing of over a hundred species of coloured gemstones (precious and semi-precious), both natural and synthetic, carving, bead-making, stringing, manufacture of objects d'art. In jewellery, it is known for its hand-made jewellery in Kundan and Meena-kari. The two and a half centuries old gems manufacturing industry in Jaipur houses over three thousand units, employing around two lakh people. The industry’s total turnover hovers around Rs. 2700 crore and is growing 10 percent every year.

Over the past decade, the industry has witnessed a complete transformation. With heavy investment in technology, gemstone cutters have forward integrated and have started Jewellery manufacturing.
